When considering roof repair or new roof installation, it is best to understand the roofing process initially. This is because you will be able to make learned decisions if you understand the various method used in the roofing process.
As per the roofing experts, a moderately sized professional new roof installation can take only three or four days to finish. The process followed when installing roof shingles on existing ones will be like this:
The Process
Remove All Existing Shingles
All old shingles, drip edging, and valley flashing will be removed and deposited in a roll-off dumpster.
Make Small Repairs
The roofing crew will do minor repairs if the roofing is in good condition, otherwise, damaged and bad wood on the roof will be replaced with new wood.
Install Ice Dam Protection Is Needed
The ice dam protection is a waterproof barrier material that prevents melting ice from collecting under the roof shingles and penetrating via the roof sheathing. This will be used in areas that require it.
Use Asphalt Roofing Paper Over Sheathing
The asphalt roofing paper will act as a barrier against water seeping into the house. Rows of roofing paper will be overlapped as they progress towards the peak of the roof.
Apply Metal Drip Edging Around Roof Edge
The metal drip edging will be applied both on gable sides and on eaves sides. The edging will be nailed in place over the ice guard or the roofing paper.
Apply New Valley Flashing Where Necessary
New valley flashing will be applied wherever necessary. The valley flashing will be usually nailed to the deck.
Apply Tab Shingles
The tab shingles will be applied from the eaves towards the peak of the roofing. In the areas of roof vents, the tab shingles will be installed as the progress of the shingles towards the roof peak.
Apply Flashing Around Areas Where Leak Might Occur
Flashing will be applied around the chimney, stack vents, etc. Installation of flashing can take place as part of the installation of the roofing.
Install Ridge Vent
The ridge vent will be a continuous vent along the peak of the roof. These vents help in exhausting hot air and avoiding ice dams in winter.
Complete Final Cleanup
After finishing the installation, clean up the area completely and move the debris away. Once all that is done, the roofing installation should be inspected and approved by a building inspector.
